Music Monday: The Zombie Song

Music Monday again! And since it's October, I'm gonna share one of my favorite Halloween-ish songs.

Our love story,
Could be kind of gory.
Far from boring,
We'd meet at a post....apocalypse.

Yeah I'd be slowly walking,
In a group stalking.
You, you'd be the only man alive,
That I could not resist.

Then all of your friends,
they'd try to kill us,
But only because,
they'd be jealous.
That our love is deeper,
than Edward and Bella's.

Oh, if I were a zombie,
I'd never eat your brain.
I'd just want your heart,
Yeah I'd want your heart,
I just want your heart, yeah.

If I were a zombie,
I'd never eat your brain.
I'd just want your heart,
yeah I'd want your heart,
I just want your heart.
'cause I want ya.

You'd be hiding in,
A second floor apartment.
Knockin' all the stairs down,
To save your life, from the undead.

Double barrel shotgun,
Taking out the slow ones.
Then you'd see the passion,
burning in my eye.
And I'd keep my head.

Then all of your friends,
they'd try to kill us,
But only because,
they'd be jealous.
That our love is deeper,
than Edward and Bella's.

Oh, if I were a zombie,
I'd never eat your brain.
I'd just want your heart,
Yeah I'd want your heart,
I just want your heart, yeah.

If I were a zombie,
I'd never eat your brain.
I'd just want your heart,
Yeah I'd want your heart,
I just want your heart.
'cause I want ya.

And I'd try not to bite and infect you,
Because I respect you too much.
That's why I'd wait until we got married.
Oh, and our happiest days would be spent,
Picking off all your friends.
Then they'd see a love this deep won't stay buried.

If I were a zombie,
I'd never eat your brain.
I'd just want your heart,
Yeah I'd want your heart,
I just want your heart, yeah.

If I were a zombie,
I'd never eat your brain.
I'd just want your heart,
Yeah I'd want your heart,
I just want your heart.
'cause I want ya.

It's Finally Ironic!

Remember that song by Alanis Morissette called? She named it "Ironic" when really it was full of things that were really just rather unfortunate, not actually ironic. I tried explain this to my friends as they screamed the lyrics in the car. They didn't listen. Such is the plight of the grammar dork.

Then I saw this link on Facebook (thanks, Brent and Grammar Girl!).
Finally! The song is now ironic! (even if the singing is not so great…)

Music Monday: On Top Of The World

I've posted Imagine Dragons before, but I just gotta share another one…

Things have been difficult lately. There's been a lot of sadness and tears. We've all struggled. After months, we are starting to feel like life is settling down. Sure, we all have our moments still, but at least the fog is fading. We've not quite to the point where we feel like we're on top of the world, but at least now we see it might just be possible to smile again.

If you love somebody
Better tell them while they’re here ’cause
They just may run away from you

You’ll never know what went well
Then again it just depends on
How long of time is left for you

I’ve had the highest mountains
I’ve had the deepest rivers
You can have it all but life keeps moving

Now take it in but don’t look down

‘Cause I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I’ve been waiting to smile, ‘ay
Been holding it in for a while, ‘ay
Take it with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since a child
I’m on top of the world.

I’ve tried to cut these corners
Try to take the easy way out
I kept on falling short of something

I coulda gave up then but
Then again I couldn’t have ’cause
I’ve traveled all this way for something

Now take it in but don’t look down

‘Cause I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I’ve been waiting to smile, ‘ay
Been holding it in for a while, ‘ay
Take it with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since a child
I’m on top of the world.

‘Cause I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I’ve been waiting to smile, ‘ay
Been holding it in for a while, ‘ay
Take it with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since a child

And I know it’s hard when you’re falling down
And it’s a long way up when you hit the ground
Get up now, get up, get up now.

And I know it’s hard when you’re falling down
And it’s a long way up when you hit the ground
Get up now, get up, get up now.

‘Cause I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I’ve been waiting to smile, ‘ay
Been holding it in for a while, ‘ay
Take it with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since a child
I’m on top of the world.

Because I Care

I am reposting this due to a conversation I had last night with my writing critique group.
(Originally posted January 7, 2011)

**********

Sorry, my friends! I've been attacked and held hostage by germs. Again. At least they waited until after Christmas. So while I lay on my bed and the kids run rampant (and possibly diaperless), I've been seeing scenes from some of my favorite movies, music, and tv shows from the 80s. Because I love the 80s. Ferris Bueller's Day Off. That one cool video that made me wish I could draw something other than stick figures and puffy horses. And Fawlty Towers.

That show began my appreciation of British humor. It's why I have a limited edition, collector's version of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Also, because I'm a dork. So it was only fitting that my hero, John Cleese*, could explain one of my pet peeves in a way that had escaped me all these years. Sure, I knew why what these people were saying was so wrong that it caused my internal editor to gag, choke, and possibly dry heave a little. But it took the perfectly eloquent Mr. Cleese and his Windows 95 clipart charts to explain it.

And since my current template tends to cut off the edges of videos, you might have better luck viewing it here.

* Thanks to the lovely and talented Annette for bringing this nugget of grammar gold to light.

Music Monday: Home

This isn't exactly a new song, but it's been on my mind for the past several weeks. We've been thinking about moving…actually, we've been thinking about it for three years. But now we actually have an agent and have looked at a couple houses. This song keep going through my head as I think about where we will be this time next year. And how our lives are already so changed.

Hold on, to me as we go
As we roll down this unfamiliar road
And although this wave (wave) is stringing us along
Just know you're not alone
Cause I'm gonna make this place your home

Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

Just know you're not alone
Cause I'm gonna make this place your home

Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

Just know you're not alone
Cause I'm gonna make this place your home

MM: Radioactive

The Snowman introduced me to several new bands while staying with us. My two new favorites are Mumford & Sons and Imagine Dragons. "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons is such a fascinating song to me that I'm actually writing a short story inspired by it. The video is kinda crazy, but I gotta say that I like it!

I'm waking up to ash and dust
I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust
I'm breathing in the chemicals

I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa

I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive

I raise my flags, don my clothes
It's a revolution, I suppose
We're painted red to fit right in
Whoa

I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa

I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive

All systems go, the sun hasn't died
Deep in my bones, straight from inside

I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive

Lars in America

Remember the Boy's Lego party? We're kind obsessed with all things Lego around here. Hence our extensive collection of Lego Wii games. So when I came across an animated movie featuring a minifigure, it quickly became a favorite.

Now the Boy wants a Sorry game for Christmas. I wondering if it's for the actual game or because he hopes to recreate the movie…

Go visit KendallNelsonart.blogspot.com and check out his other creations. He is majorly talented!

And we could all use a little smile right about now…

Music Monday: Titanium

Maybe I'm behind the trend (big surprise there, right?), but the first I'd heard of David Guetta was from my brother showing me some teenybopper chick singing his song "Titanium." I thought the lyrics were great but her video was pretty lame. Then I noticed it was a cover. One more click and I found the original. With a much cooler video.

Gives a whole new meaning to throwing a fit.

[Sia:]
You shout it out,
But I can't hear a word you say
I'm talking loud not saying much
I'm criticized but all your bullets ricochet
You shoot me down, but I get up

[Chorus:]
I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose
Fire away, fire away
Ricochet, you take your aim
Fire away, fire away
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium

[Sia:]
Cut me down
But it's you who have further to fall
Ghost town and haunted love
Raise your voice, sticks and stones may break my bones
I'm talking loud not saying much

[Chorus:]
I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose
Fire away, fire away
Ricochet, you take your aim
Fire away, fire away
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
I am titanium
I am titanium

[Sia:]
Stone-hard, machine gun
Firing at the ones who run
Stone-hard those bulletproof glass

[Chorus:]
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
I am titanium

Music Monday: Missing

I like very vocal songs that tell powerful stories. I don't like screaming guitar solos and singers who feel the need to yell everything. And when I'm feeling all moody, I put on a playlist of my really sad songs. Like this one:

There isn't an official music video but I really liked the images in this one. Such a soul-rendingly sad song and Amy Lee's voice just adds that extra knife in your heart.

Try not to cry. Go eat some chocolate and you'll feel better. Or go check out the other songs featured! You might something a little more cheery.

So do you miss me?

Music Monday: Settle Down

I'm a little obsessed with Kimbra right now. She's the female on Gotye's "Somebody that I Used to Know" and I posted about another one of her songs, "Cameo Lover." She's Austrailian and quirky-just watch her dance moves! She dances like I would if I were actually cool and not a ginormous dork.

I know, the song is a little weird and the video even weirder…but just give it another listen. It really grows on you.

Bad Romance: Women's Suffrage

I know it seems like I'm just posting music videos lately but I thought this was definitely worth sharing. The video below was all over the place on Women's Day (March 8) but I saw it as a spoof of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" so I didn't pay much attention. It took the Newlywed sitting me down and making me watch  this. The video is actually a fairly accurate portrayal of what it was like for Alice Paul, one of the leaders of the Women's Suffrage campaign. They really did put her in a mental institution and force feed her during her hunger strike. And the deciding vote for the final state? He really was a young man whose mother had asked him to vote for women's rights.

Boo watched this with me and wondered what the women wanted to vote for. So we got to have a discussion about life back when women weren't given the same rights and recognition as men. An eye-opener for her, as she had no idea. They have another one about the Declaration of Independence, which Boo also asked about. Is the third grade too early to learn about why the American colonies declared their independence? I didn't think so but I guess they haven't gone into too much detail about it, yet.

Also? That talk wasn't nearly as bad as some we've had in the past.

I've Got High Hopes, Baby

Okay, I know it isn't Music Monday but Kimbra's "Cameo Lover" has been stuck in my head for nearly an entire week. It's a little embarrassing to be standing in the check-out line at the grocery store and realize that you are miming playing a tambourine while humming this song.

So I'm going off the premise of The Ring and sharing this song with others, hoping to save myself while condemning others to their own versions of public dancing.

And Kimbra, the artist performing this song was also featured on Gotye's song "Somebody That I Used To Know" that I posted about previously. She's got another song that has equal ear worm appeal but most people find that one a little weird the first time or two, but it's a good one, too. I just might feature that one for the next Music Monday...

Music Monday: Somebody That I Used To Know

You know how you get a song stuck in your head, drum out the beat on your kitchen table, sing it in the car, and then find yourself bursting out with the chorus in the middle of the produce section at your grocery store? Or maybe that's just me…

Lately, the song I've been embarrassing my children with spontaneous performances of is Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know." Kinda reminds me of Peter Gabriel (who I always get confused with Peter Cetera) and he was popular back when I was skinny and cute so I can't help but be nostalgic for those days. Anywho…the Snowman showed me a really cool cover of Gotye's song by a band called Walk Off The Earth. Apparently they were bored one afternoon and decided to record a video with only one guitar.

Still, fascinating to watch (especially the guy on the far right).

What song gets stuck in your head?

If I Were A Zombie...

The "Out of Candy" sign went on the door a little early this tear. The bucket still has some goodies but I'm hanging on to the last of the Kit Kats. The kids have collapsed from their sugar-induced frenzy. I've already "inspected" a few pieces of candy (you can never be too careful…especially when it comes to chocolate). Pictures are coming later. Maybe.

Meanwhile, enjoy this seasonally suitable video:

Thanks to Just SO for the link. And Tipi? This one's for you!

What candy do you steal inspect from your kids' bags?

Foreign Relations

The Man recently spent some time overseas. He's used to not getting out to see the sights because by the time he's done with work, it's usually the middle of the night. So he watches television (if I'm not available on iChat).

America is pretty obsessed with their television, hence the hundreds of channels of virtual nonsense that runs constantly. Europeans? Not so much. When the Man was staying, there were only four channels available, none of which were in English. So needing to unwind from a busy day and having nothing better , he found himself watching what he thought was a brown sponge.

He's actually a loaf of bread; the German equivalent of Moose A. Moose from Nick Jr.. I've never met carbohydrates with such mad rapping skillz. There are a couple good ones with English subtitles here and here but they didn't allow embedding.

Did you enjoy the cultural lesson for today?

S.I.M.P.

Maybe it's the painkillers I've needed lately or maybe Phineas and Ferb is just stinkin' hilarious…it's one of the few shows I'll watch with the kids, as the rest of them make my eyeballs want to explode.

Also? They have a link where you can make a 2D image of yourself by uploading a photo. So of course I tried it. And this is what I got:

Yep. That's me. Just need to add a few kid-placed smudges to my clothes and put a book in my hand to perfect the look. Some chocolate would be nice, too. Mmmmm…chocolate

It's better to burn out than fade away

So.
I went to see Def Leppard last night. This was the second time I've seen them in concert. And we had much better seats than last time.

Pretty cool, huh? We had this nice walkway in front of us, which was great for dancing (or if you were the couple next to us, it was more like drunken staggering). Next time? I want the seats with tables and padded chairs.

Since my brain is still recovering from the booming bass and such, I'm just going to link to a couple videos from the two featured bands.

First up was Heart.

I only knew a few of their songs. A lady a little in front of us was jumping around like crazy so I'm pretty sure they were the reason why she came.

Def Leppard was the real headliner.

They began their set with a song off their latest album. The song is called "Undefeated" and on the screens in the background, they flashed pictures and news articles about people who has achieved the unthinkable, like Bethany Hamilton and Michael Phelps. Also included were the images of the band's tragedies. The montage added to the power behind the lyrics and it just might be my new favorite song.

Last night also served as a reminder of the reasons why I do not imbibe. People who downed a few too many beers were a big source of entertainment. The inebriated make very unwise decisions when it comes to…well, pretty much everything, from dance moves to dance partners, from clothing removal to amped up reactions to imagined slights. And I'm sure more than a few are going to end up on Facebook (or Failbook After Dark). I'm sure their kids would be so proud.

Speaking of kids…the VIP section in front of us had quite a few teens and kids seated there. If I'd paid $120 each for tickets for my teenage daughter and her two friends, then they better put down their stupid phones and watch the concert. Ridiculous. The parents even shelled out another $40 each for matching concert shirts for the girls.

I'm sounding a little grumpy. At any moment, I might break out into a "when I was your age…" speech. I didn't go to a real concert until I was in 17. I went with three friends to see UB40. I don't remember a lot from that night (probably because it was forever ago) but I do remember being so stoked to be there that I didn't care when the band played songs I didn't know.

What was your first concert?

WWTK Wednesday...but not

Seems like I'm always doing this one a day late...

Photobucket

And if you have a minute, go read Mamarazzi's answers. It was her memory about a song that did me in. I've gotta put that in one of my books. This week's questions were provided by the seriously funny Seriously Shawn.

1.} What is the best, or worst, pick up line you have ever been given?
"Are you an astronaut? Because your butt is out of this world." And I'm sorry to say that I giggled in response, but he didn't get my number. I later used this line on the Man with much better results.

2.} What is your most and least favorite day of the week?
Least favorite is Monday. There's something about Mondays that leaves me feeling somewhat hungover, even though I don't drink. It's the day where I consume the most chocolate (unless I'm in charge of Sharing Time on Sunday). My favorite is Thursday. I don't know what it is about Thursdays, maybe it's a light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel effect or that's the night when my favorite shows are on (even though I can't ever watch live television anymore and have to wait for the kids to go to bed before I get my turn with the remote).

3.} How many hours of sleep do you require each night?
Ummm...it varies. Mainly, it depends on when the Man goes to bed because I don't like sleeping without him. Unfortunately, he can function on a lot less sleep than I can. Getting in a good eight hours is rare. The fact that we need a new mattress probably doesn't help, either.

4.} Is there a song that takes you back in time? What is it and what memory is it attached to?

Me and my sister had a whole dance routine to this song when we were kids and we'd perform for anyone who came over to our house (parents' friends, siblings' friends, home teachers, random salespeople...). We weren't especially good dancers, just really liked this song. Listening to this makes me miss my sisters. And my brothers. And my parents. And the dog.

5.} What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Girls Night Out. Leaving the house without the kids is kind of a big deal but I'd rather go with someone. A few of my friends came with me to this lovely little dessert cafe and we got to hang out and chat for a while. Even though I make cakes and can duplicate their vanilla cake fairly well, I still like getting a slice with a mug of hazelnut hot chocolate. So nice...
