Because I Care

I am reposting this due to a conversation I had last night with my writing critique group.
(Originally posted January 7, 2011)

**********

Sorry, my friends! I've been attacked and held hostage by germs. Again. At least they waited until after Christmas. So while I lay on my bed and the kids run rampant (and possibly diaperless), I've been seeing scenes from some of my favorite movies, music, and tv shows from the 80s. Because I love the 80s. Ferris Bueller's Day Off. That one cool video that made me wish I could draw something other than stick figures and puffy horses. And Fawlty Towers.

That show began my appreciation of British humor. It's why I have a limited edition, collector's version of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Also, because I'm a dork. So it was only fitting that my hero, John Cleese*, could explain one of my pet peeves in a way that had escaped me all these years. Sure, I knew why what these people were saying was so wrong that it caused my internal editor to gag, choke, and possibly dry heave a little. But it took the perfectly eloquent Mr. Cleese and his Windows 95 clipart charts to explain it.

And since my current template tends to cut off the edges of videos, you might have better luck viewing it here.

* Thanks to the lovely and talented Annette for bringing this nugget of grammar gold to light.

Lars in America

Remember the Boy's Lego party? We're kind obsessed with all things Lego around here. Hence our extensive collection of Lego Wii games. So when I came across an animated movie featuring a minifigure, it quickly became a favorite.

Now the Boy wants a Sorry game for Christmas. I wondering if it's for the actual game or because he hopes to recreate the movie…

Go visit KendallNelsonart.blogspot.com and check out his other creations. He is majorly talented!

Because It's Monday

And we could all use a little smile right about now…
(but you might want to go to the bathroom first so you don't pee yourself)

Pi Day, Pi Day, Gotta Get Down on Pi Day

So…did you remember that today was Pi day? Also known as Pie Day, for the consumption of mass quantities of pies.

(This isn't mine…here's the source.)

I spent my day at the eye doctor, and then selling my kidney on ebay to pay for new glasses for two kids. When we finally got home, I had a difficult time finding enough time out corners to contain all the attitudes that needed adjusting. I didn't get to make a pie. So sad. I am declaring tomorrow as Leftover Pie Day and shall eat half a pie straight out of the pan whilst it sits in the fridge.

Here are some of the dishes of deliciousness I am considering:
Peanut Butter Pie (but I won't be making my own peanut butter…)
Old Fashioned Fudge Pie (because everything is better with butter)
Little Lemon Meringue Pies (since they're smaller, I can eat more of them, right?)
Chocolate Cream Pie (I don't normally take my chocolate in pie form, but this is a special occasion)

What kind of pie did you eat?
Or what kind of pie would you like to eat around midnight after the kids are in bed?

Is It Time To Panic Yet?

Currently, I am only halfway to where I need to be at this point in the month. I don't even want to know what my word count is going to be by the end of today...

Foreign Relations

The Man recently spent some time overseas. He's used to not getting out to see the sights because by the time he's done with work, it's usually the middle of the night. So he watches television (if I'm not available on iChat).

America is pretty obsessed with their television, hence the hundreds of channels of virtual nonsense that runs constantly. Europeans? Not so much. When the Man was staying, there were only four channels available, none of which were in English. So needing to unwind from a busy day and having nothing better , he found himself watching what he thought was a brown sponge.

He's actually a loaf of bread; the German equivalent of Moose A. Moose from Nick Jr.. I've never met carbohydrates with such mad rapping skillz. There are a couple good ones with English subtitles here and here but they didn't allow embedding.

Did you enjoy the cultural lesson for today?

S.I.M.P.

Maybe it's the painkillers I've needed lately or maybe Phineas and Ferb is just stinkin' hilarious…it's one of the few shows I'll watch with the kids, as the rest of them make my eyeballs want to explode.

Also? They have a link where you can make a 2D image of yourself by uploading a photo. So of course I tried it. And this is what I got:

Yep. That's me. Just need to add a few kid-placed smudges to my clothes and put a book in my hand to perfect the look. Some chocolate would be nice, too. Mmmmm…chocolate

I Need A Theme Song

Okay, maybe this belongs on Friday Confessional, but I kinda wish I had a theme song. You know, some catchy little tune that would blare in the background on those rare occasions when I am totally awesome, maybe with some wind effects to blow my hair around. And fireworks. Or maybe a chocolate waterfall.

Apparently, I'm not the only one. (And just in case you've never heard of Annoying Orange, go here to watch the first episode. But don't show it to your kids or they will insist on watching all the videos instead of having family home evening.)

What is your theme song? And does it involve rainbows?

Provo, UT Girls

My brother sent me this link a little while ago and I laughed so hard I nearly wet myself. Sadly, I knew a few girls like this (and might possibly have been accused of the same behavior, with my stalking the Man and all).

Enjoy!

Gotta Post Something

Have I really disappeared for an entire week?? Geesh. Well, you aren't the only ones who noticed.

cartoon from www.weblogcartoons.com

Cartoon by Dave Walker. Find more cartoons you can freely re-use on your blog at We Blog Cartoons.

The upstairs hallway was nearly impassable from all the various piles of clothes. And Boo was getting rather creative with her outfits at school...hey, when I'm wearing pajama pants and t-shirts daily, I don't make a lot of laundry. Active children and husband? Different story.

The writing is progressing. I don't totally hate my characters yet this year. And I haven't been bursting into tears while simultaneously smashing my head into a wall, trying to figure out what to do next. I'm reading blogs instead of doing that...

Any ideas on how to uncover the previously unknown Big Bad Guy? No? I'm so screwed. *sigh*

LOL

I could use a laugh. I've been listening to far too much moody music lately. It's time for a change around here and I think some levity is way overdue. Laughter is the best medicine, right? You know, the really good kind of giggles. The kind of laughing that's so hard, your jaw locks and you drool on yourself. When milk shoots out your nose and you might wet yourself a little. Some of that.

So here's the deal: Make me laugh and I'll send you an iTunes gift card.

Yup. I have a $15 gift card for the winner, whom I shall select. I might let the kids help, too.

In your comment, include the link to a particularly funny YouTube video, blog post, or photo, whatever. As long as I can access it online, it counts. Keep in mind that Boo and the Boy will see it, so keep it relatively clean. I'll announce the winner one week from today, so if you have a particularly funny friend, pass the word along.

To get you going, here's a little something that I discovered earlier today, while procrastinating doing the laundry.

Wordless Wednesday: LOL Cats

(Okay, so most of my words are going heavily into my NaNoWriMo attempt...but you know I can't be entirely wordless. And besides, this photo has a caption. From the ever-entertaining LOL Cats.)

Queen For A Day

Today is the first day of summer vacation.

So far, there have been:
5 Fights
4 Temper Tantrums
2 Threats
1 Bloody Lip
2 Time-outs
1 Sent to Room

And it's not even snack time yet! Not looking forward to the rest of the summer. I saw this comic strip featuring Baby Blues and have adopted it as my motto.

Miss Me While I'm Gone!

So I'm not really here right now but I don't want you to stare at your computer screens, all lonely and bored. Here's a little something for your viewing pleasure. I think I actually saw this when it originally aired and loved it.

And if the embedding isn't working, I can't get off the cruise boat and fix it so go here instead.

What is one modern miracle that you take for granted?

Friday Funny

The only pictures I took this week were of my fabulous swap package. So instead of Foto Friday, I'm sharing a funny. It's so rare that I have anything funny on my blog...

A friend sent me this cartoon a little while ago and I've been dying to share it.

Go check out 9th Ward Cartoons! (The 3rd Ward is pretty good, too.) If you're not LDS, a lot of the humor may be lost on you but there's some universal ones. Let me know which one was your favorite!
