Eye of the Beholder

I have a few fears and phobias. I hate basements...especially at night. I don't like feet on me (but have a complete double standard on that and I insist on putting my cold feet on the Man's warm legs). The thought of fish touching me absolutely terrifies me. Hey, never said I was rational.

But don't even discuss touching my eyes. I think it started with with movie "Fire in the Sky." It's about alien abduction. In one scene, they show some of the experiments the alleged aliens performed on their victims. It involves the guy's head held still, eyelid pried open, and a very, very long needle. Makes my eyes water just thinking about it.

Then there was that kid in my high school...he left his contact lenses in for three weeks straight -- this was before you were supposed to do that ('cuz I'm old) -- and had to have them surgically removed. It's one of the big reasons why I'm very grateful for my good eyesight, which does not require me to wear glasses, much less contacts. Also why I don't encourage the Man to trade in his specs. I don't think I could handle watching him put in contacts and take them out. Ugh...shivers my spine when I imagine that. But with two kids in glasses and most likely a third one, I don't think I'll dodge that bullet much longer.

Okay, so what's my point? Before I go on and on about trying to take better care of myself, make more of an effort, blah blah blah, I'll cut to the chase: I got an eyelash curler. I've never used one before. Never had one used on me, either. Not even in the infamous Glamour Shots. And frankly, I have no idea how to use it.

Do I use the curler after mascara or before? Maybe between coats? How long do I hold it there? Seriously, how long? After a few seconds, my eye starts to twitch and I begin to wonder if I might accidentally rip off all my lashes. Someone please tell me that can't actually happen...I think I'd rather be abducted by aliens than be lashless.

That description of the movie scene, made MY eyes water. Yuck!

I'm glad Kristina knows..I'm clueless. I have one, but have never even bothered with it.

The idea of me giving anyone makeup advice just makes me giggle inside, but I will tell you what I can.

I'm pretty sure you only need to hold it there about 3 to 5 seconds. Repeat if necessary. Actually I heard someone who would know once say that you should curl at the lid and then keep on curling slowly moving out until you get to the tips. But I save that for super special occasions.

How to Curl Your Lashes Video

When I do bother to curl my lashes I tend to just curl once, apply one coat of mascara, and call it good.

WAIT! we are supposed to curl our lashes now!?!
WHO KEEPS THINKING OF THESE THINGS!

Let me warn you to watch your eyelid skin. Don't get it so close that you get skin. Someone curled my eyelashes for me once and pinched the crap out of my eyelid. In your particular case, I'm not sure you'd ever try it again if that happened. So be careful. Also, maybe I am high maintenance, but I curl three times--base of the lashes, middle of the lashes, and the end of the lashes. Then, I apply mascara, first on the top of my eyelashes and then the regular way. Like I said, maybe too high maintenance, but I make up for it by only wearing make-up about 3 times a week!;)

I don't wear makeup on a regular basis, but I used to use an eyelash curler all the time!!

I HATE basements!! When we went on vacation to TN our condo was a split level, and I was terrified to go downstairs alone, it didn't matter whether or not it was night or day.

I'm right there with you on that fish touching you phobia. I love to waterski, but the minute I'm down GET ME BACK IN THE BOAT BECAUSE THERE ARE FISH OUT HERE AUUUUGGGHHH!

I have an eyelash curler too (shudder). Those people telling you they do it three times on each eye are pure crazy. But then I have stubby little eyelashes. Maybe theirs are half an inch long or something.

I curl BEFORE mascara & only for a couple seconds. Them I use "Two Faced" "Lash Injection" mascara. It makes these tubes around each eyelasy that extends & keeps the curl ALL DAY! I love it. You can get it at ULTA or Sephora. http://bandcsheens.blogspot.com/2009/10/ill-never-leave-you-again.html
I don't like makeup & have stubby eyelashes so I need all the help I can get
