Teaser Tuesday: So Yesterday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share a few “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers.

I had just read Peeps, so I thought I'd get the other Scott Westerfeld book I'd heard about, this one called So Yesterday.

Here's the blurb from Goodreads: "Ever wonder who was the first kid to keep a wallet on a big chunky chain, or wear way-too-big pants on purpose? What about the mythical first guy who wore his baseball cap backwards? These are the Innovators, the people on the very cusp of cool. Seventeen-year-old Hunter Braque's job is finding them for the retail market.

But when a big-money client disappears, Hunter must use all his cool-hunting talents to find her. Along the way he's drawn into a web of brand-name intrigue-a missing cargo of the coolest shoes he's ever seen, ads for products that don't exist, and a shadowy group dedicated to the downfall of consumerism as we know it."

Here's the Teaser:
"In a friendlier context I would have pegged him as a gay bodybuilder doing an ironic take on NASCAR fandom. But alongside the other two, he looked more like one of many hopefuls sent down by central casting to try out for the part of Thug #3 in a hip new thriller."
- pg 66, So Yesterday by Scott Westerfeld

Okay, I like vampires! (Even the ones that sparkle.) So when I heard the Scott Westerfeld (of Uglies fame) had a vampire book out, I scooped it up! A new take on vampires and a really good read.

Cal is infected. But this disease is not your typical head cold. Sure, he gets superhuman strength, sight, and smell, while craving red meat, but this particular infection doesn't like to play nice. Fortunately for him, he's immune. Unfortunately, anyone Cal kisses can become infected and the odds are they won't fair as well as he does. First, you start to not like the things you used to love, like chocolate or Elvis. Then you can't stand to see your own face in a mirror and sunlight hurts. Pretty soon, you aren't too picky about the meat you eat, even if that steak used to be your neighbor. So when during an investigation he meets a girl, Cal's first inclination is to stay away. But Lace isn't the kind of girl that accepts his carefully crafted story. And she might just be the very thing he needs the most.

Here's the Teaser:
"Something happened here," Lace said. "Something the landlords wanted to cover up. I need to know what it was."
- pg 60, Peeps by Scott Westerfeld

Mothering Moments: Good Parenting

Being a mother is hard work. There's the long hours, breaking up fights, constantly picking up, endless laundry, and meals to prepare. Not to mention very little pay, unless you shun cash and prefer crayon artwork on your walls, "shared" sticky candy, and someone eating all the Little Debbie's so you don't ruin your diet. You are supposed to mold them into decent human beings and guide their path as best you can. Being a mom is not for the faint-hearted.

But every now and then, a brief spark of happiness shines through, and all the stretch marks and mom jeans are worth it. I had one of those rare glimpses one Saturday while the kids were watching Harry Potter: The Prisoner of Azkaban. This conversation testified that I am doing the very best for my kids.

Baby: Why is Doctor Who in Harry Potter?
Boo: Because he's playing the bad guy.
Baby: Doctor Who is not a bad guy! He's the Doctor!
(Baby proceeds to be indignant about her sister's claims while Boo attempts to explain the concept of actors.)

Isn't being a mother great?
