Fashion for Dummies

I do not know what to do with clothes. Oh, sure, I usually know how to dress myself: snap, buckle, and zip (although side zippers get tricky...). But when it comes to putting outfits together, I am completely clueless. Mostly, I get whatever the mannequin is wearing so I can be certain it goes together. It helps to make sure the mannequin is female and age-appropriate. You don't want to see me in a mini skirt.

And shoes? I am completely lost on what shoes are best. Black boots go with everything, right? When in doubt, I wear my mary janes (which are also black). Last time I counted, I owned 12 pairs of shoes - including my summer sandals and that one ugly pair of crocs. Definitely not a shoe addict.

So this is where I need your help, my beloved Internet!

Let's pretend I just bought this dress (if you are my husband; don't worry, I got it on sale!):

And this cute shrug:

I'm thinking Christmas parties and family photos.

But what does do I wear with this? I have some black boots (picture taken from the Payless site...not exactly like mine but the heels are close enough):

Those might not be so great...what about these two (both from Payless)?

A little on the edgy side for me and I'd probably never wear them with anything else. See? I told you I was clueless. I just didn't get the "shoe gene" on my extra X chromosome. And I'm not sure I want to go entirely in silver. What are the kids going to wear that would be good with this? I don't want us to end up looking like we're dressed in foil, expecting an alien invasion. If I knew how to do it, I be wringing my hands in agitation...

So...What do you think? Please send links, pictures, or samples. :) Um, but keep in mind that along with no shoe gene, I also didn't get the "spend huge amounts on apparel" gene so I can't stomach spending $80 on a pair of shoes. I know, I know...I should go into some sort of conditioning camp for the fashion-deficient.

And if you are fashion-enabled and can make an awesome outfit from anything, would you please come with me to find clothes for the kids that go with this dress? I'm serious about this! We haven't had a family picture since the Boy was born and family members are starting to think Baby doesn't really exist, as they have no photographic proof of our improved family unit. I really need help! I'll buy you lunch! I might even bring cupcakes...Anyone? Anyone?

The dress is really cute, and I like the silver sandals, however, I was born without the fashion gene myself, so I' not sure how much you can rely on my opinion.

I have five brothers. And I live with five boys. I was not blessed with the fashion gene, either. (as you may remember...)

My fashion expertise is confined to whatever I can find off the clearance rack at any store. I am such a tight wad, that if we were millionaires, I would still shop off the clearance rack.

I really wish I could help you. Good luck! But, if you do want my opinion, I like the silver heels, and I think the dress and shrug are adorable!

That dress is much to delicate to wear with those boots. I would definitely wear silver shoes.

I own over 80 pairs of shoes!

I'm a little on the fashion challenged side myself, but I LOVE SHOES! And purses. I would go with a colored shoe, just to add a little kick. Just last week I was at Payless and saw an adorable pair of pink ballet flats...cute and kid friendly. And you could wear them with other things as well. Then, you could put the girls in pink and the boys in blue. I'd definitely go dressy since the picture of your dress looks pretty fancy. But, then they'd each have some new church clothes for Christmas...two birds with one stone, baby. ;o) Good Luck!

I have a million pairs of shoes b/c no matter what size you are, your feet don't seem to change :o)

I would definitely go with the silver ones. Also, I have always found really cute shoes for under $40 at JCPenney. My latest addiction is a tiny store in our mall called Traffic that has great dressy shoes for under $25. With Homecoming season coming to an end, you might be able to find some cute shoes on sale soon. I like the simple style of the silver shoes you picked, and wouldn't go with anything too much more flashy/strappy.

Not the boots. But it's hard to give advice without a picture of you in it!

I, too, am fashionably challenged. This website has great ideas and often posts complete outfits (shoes and accessories, too!)...

This is the first time I've posted a comment on your blog. Just wanted to let you know that you make me laugh - you are a very skilled writer! :-)

You must wear red heels with this adorable outfit. You can choose the fabric, style, height, etc. But the red part is critical. You need a pop of color and with the being a holiday outfit, red is very fitting.

Purple would be fun too. Just think "bright color". Please don't wear tall black boots.

Pop with color. Classy, formal red. Heels would be gorgeous, then frost yourself in red. (jewlery, necklace, earrings, bracelet).

I like the silver sandal look, but I am not exactly blessed with good fashion taste myself. I took my kids pictures in gray and green for Christmas and it turned out super cute-that would match well!

I LOVE the red heel idea! Love it. Would not of thought of it myself though. I would wear the black boots. I wear either brown or black boots all winter long. I say it is because we almost live in Canada.....but truth is, I like them and I think it draws attention from my thick calf. Five kids did a number on my once delicate calves ;o) (oh and lots of other stuff too!)

yeah, I know, I am commenting WAY too late to be helpful, but i just wanted to chime in. Cuz I watch a lot of What Not To Wear, so of course I know things now.

And they say that Silver is a neutral, which means that you could wear almost any color with it. Which makes for a pretty great dress.

It really is super cute, and I too wish there were pictures.
