Will Power

I am considering going on a diet.

I know, I know...most of you are shocked because I obviously don't need to lose weight, right? Hey, the Michelin Man has got it going ON and so do I, right? But that little punk Wii Fit gasps every time I step on and it would be nice to be able to fit into some of my older clothes. And I'd really like to not be mistaken for a pregnant woman by complete strangers.

This diet is one of those "change your lifestyle" ones where they give you a long list of everything you can no longer eat and then a few items that are still allowed. The problem is the diet takes some money to get started. Before I spend all that cash, I wanted to give myself a test to see if I really could resist my favorite guilty pleasures (ie: everything in my pantry).

Back in my youthful days, I tried this "Hollywood 48-hour Diet," where you drink juice for two days, shedding pounds with every sip. While I didn't got the boasted 10 pounds, I still lost a few. However, I could never go the full 48 hours! I got too hungry, couldn't fight a craving for something chewy, or simply forgot and ate something (like half a pan of brownies). So this was my test: go the full 48 hours. No cheating. (And we all know how much I love to cheat...)

I started drinking the juice Sunday night. No worries. I like the taste. In between sips of juice, I'd have some water. That's it. NO CHEATING. It wasn't until Boo got home from school on Monday that I nearly had to lock myself in my room to keep from snacking (but that really wouldn't have helped as I have a chocolate stash in there). I desperately wanted something to chew! Give me nachos! I need one of those cheese biscuits that we had for dinner! A tootsie roll! ANYTHING! It was agony but I survived. I did make one mistake, though. When I was making the Boy a peanut butter sandwich, I licked the knife when I was done because I always do. Habits - especially those involving food - are hard to break.

Now, with 40 hours down and 8 to go...I think I might be done. I don't know if I can handle it anymore. I'm starving. I have a headache. All the hidden goodies are screaming my name (shoot, even the forgotten leftovers stuffed in the back of the fridge are beginning to sound appealing). Instead of diving head-first into the kids' collection of fruit snacks, I'm blogging.

So close...so close...

What do you do to resist the cravings?

Nope, I hadn't read your blog, it wasn't up on my reader. Still isn't, but with your heads up, I headed over!
I don't resist the cravings. Ask Sher, she might have some ideas.

Well, I've heard chewing sugar free gum can be helpful in a diet. I'm not exactly a dieting expert though. I've been working on eating more healthy and I've found, for myself, that I just change one thing at a time and slowly those changes just become part of my life. I have a hard time maintaining drastic changes...my old ways just come running back. Plus, a lot of change at once usually requires more brain power than I have. ;o)

I did Weight Watchers and it's great. It's just kind of common sense and I lost twenty pounds without feeling like I was doing without.

I've gone cold turkey on Diet Coke, but it's not really hard for me.

I am a big believer in having what you want, in moderation. I think if you deprive yourself of anything completely, you binge.

BTW, I don't have your email address, and we really need to consult about Brittany's cake!

I agree with Kristina! You can't cut out everything. I lost 95lbs 2 years ago, and I would find a way to include some of my guilty pleasures, like budgetnig my calorie count 200 below my limit, that way if I slipped it wasn't the end of the world.
I also had 10lb rewards, every 10lbs we would go out to eat, but still make good choices & always come home with left overs.
I also chew gum ALL THE TIME!! I'm such a frugal hack that I hate to waste gum by taking out of my mouth to eat something that I seriously consider the value of the food I'm about to consume.

You're not considering the diet Amy J did are you? I think Weight Watchers is much more sustainable long term. There's nothing off limits and you have flex points you can use at parties or special occasions. Good luck!!! (Of course, I'm not an unbiased opinion, but I think Amy's diet was NOT something anyone could do long term- I probably couldn't do it for 1 day)

I drink water or chew gum. I have a hard time with those detox diets too. I've done them a few times though. When you do make lifestyle changes though, you need to find acceptable alternatives, not just elimate stuff. Like, I LOVE chips. An acceptable alternative for me are baked chips or Chex Mix. Good luck my friend.

Listen to Amber!!!! Weight Watchers really works and is realistic. They also have really tasty CHOCOLATE treats for like one point! Exercising twice a day, not eating after dinner and rewarding myself every 10 lbs with a pedicure is what works for me. I have done everything and the more expensive the diet, the more you should think twice (and three times) before you pay up. I will have to tell you an expensive story sometime.

I'm Not. I'm resisting the cravings, that is! I have NO WILL Power! I earned this figure...that's a lot of calories in and none out. Why would I try to reverse all that work now?

Sleep.
I've discovered that I don't eat much while I'm sleeping.

Jillybean just made me laugh out loud. I hope whatever you decide works for you. Moderation is good. Exercise is good. Resisting cravings is really hard for me too...

OK, here's how I've done it (and it's a little strange): I actually trained my mind into believing I had a blood sugar problem. I'm not joking. I got so good at believing it that I stayed away from all the stuff I really wanted. I still ate brownies or ice cream, but maybe only one bite and then my brain would say, "That's enough! You're gonna start shaking and get sick!" It worked, and I'm amazed that it worked for so long, but now I'm pregnant, so that mind game with myself is all out the window now. :)

Hang in there Jessica! Dieting is hard. I have lost 10 pounds over the last 3 weeks using a loose weight watchers point system. I have a certain amount of points for the day to eat and that is all. If I eat the right things I can still eat munchies here and there so I don't feel like I am missing out in life. I have even eaten banana splits!! What has killed me in the past is over eating and eating too fast. Now I only drink cold water from my Target water bottle and that helps me stay full. I don't waste my points on fluid.

Good Luck,
Daniel
